Euphoric Tendencies – a review

Last week, I was lucky enough to make it to a performance of Euphoric Tendencies, the new kinky romantic comedy written by Tanya Marten, at the Actors Repertory Theatre in Manhattan.I can say, hands down, I fucking loved this show. It tells the story of Beth Moss, a frustrated writer growing increasingly dissatisfied her computer geek boyfriend Kevin, with her job at an alternative bookstore, and with her life in general.

In comes Mina, a vivacious free spirited woman who’s traveled the world, and upon her return to the city, becomes Beth’s roommate. Mina is unabashedly kinky and sexual, embracing all the pleasure life can offer. She blows into Beth’s life, and shows her a whole new world.

Through her new experiences, Beth begins to grow more confident in herself and her sexuality, and eventually in her abilities as a writer.

What I loved most about this show was how much I related to the characters. As a writer, I can relate to Beth’s frustrations with her writing. I too have jumped up and down, frustrated, on my writing tablet. (Once, it was a floppy disk.)

As for her coming into kink, despite the differences in how we found it, and how we each accepted it, Beth’s journey resonated with me. I remember how excited I was when I got my first spanking, and how I didn’t want it to end either. I remembered how I wrestled with some of the same issues she did, and found the same joy she did.

However, the play isn’t a heavy drama or buzz kill. Its fucking hysterical, for scene and non-scene people alike, though there are some things those ‘in the know’ might find funnier than others. Like the conversation between Aurora, Sam and Alex newbies, with the story of ‘baseball man’, and Mina giving Beth a copy of “The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty”. (I’m sorry, but that book always makes me giggle. I liked it well enough, but I giggle. :)

The actors are all excellent, though Katherine Barron (Beth) particularly impressed me. She really made the character come alive for me. She took Beth through the funny, the serious, the kinky, and never missed a beat.

Euphoric Tendencies is truly a wonderful story of a woman finding herself, her muse, and her kink, that I’m sure many others will love just as much as I did.

I can’t wait to see it again, and I highly encourage all of you NYC locals to come on down and see it for yourselves. You’ll love it.
