Friday Links on a Monday?

August 25th, 2008 · 2 Comments

What? I’ve been super busy this week. I’m working, whee! Ok, its just temp work, and I get to spend three or fours hours doing cross word puzzles, reading “Redwall” and dicking around on the Internet, but still, I’ve been getting up at 630 to make it there on time. Its also been so pretty out that I’ve been spending time wandering around Union Square Park. I like to go to the dog park, and watch the fenced in dogs play. Then I go to the kiddie park, an watch the fenced in kids play.

What? I like my kids behind glass, or at the very least, on a leash.

FYI, I’ve also been posting interesting articles that I find on my Tumblr, as it is quicker and easier than a round up every week. Just so you know. ^_^ I also find sexy photos, fun quotes, and other things that pique my interest and post ‘em there.

A Teacher on the Front Lines as Faith and Science Clash

‘”When the subject of evolution came up at a recent fellowship meeting, several of the students rolled their eyes.

“I think a big reason evolutionists believe what they believe is they don’t want to have to be ruled by God,” said Josh Rou, 17.

“Evolution is telling you that you’re like an animal,” Bryce agreed. “That’s why people stand strong with Christianity, because it teaches people to lead a good life and not do wrong.”

Doug Daugherty, 17, allowed that he liked science.

“I’ll watch the Discovery Channel and say ‘Ooh, that’s interesting,’ ” he said. “But there’s a difference between thinking something is interesting and believing it.”’

Since I’m pretty sure none of them are reading this, I feel comfortable saying “WHAT THE FUCK?!” I didn’t think there really were people like this in the world. I thought they were made up stories told to the children of atheists, pagans and and Mensa members. When I first met a creationist, I was so confused.

And next, speaking of natural selection…

Measels Cases Grow in Numbers, and Officials Blame Parents’ Fear of Autism
‘Many of these parents say they believe vaccines cause autism, even though multiple studies have found no reputable evidence to support such a claim. In Britain, Switzerland, Israel and Italy, measles outbreaks have soared, sickening thousands and causing at least two deaths.

….

Most of those who were sickened were unvaccinated or had an unknown vaccination status. Sixteen were younger than a year old, too young to have been vaccinated. But two-thirds of the rest — or 63 people — were unvaccinated because of their or their parents’ philosophical or religious beliefs.’

It sounds callous, but you know, whatever. If people are too stupid to understand how and why vaccines work and what they do for us, then they don’t get to propagate their genes. Its like George Carlin once said “The kids who swallows too many marbles doesn’t get to grow up and have kids of his own.’”

Look at me and my sisters, my whole family. We’ve gotten vaccinated for everything. MMR, DPT,Tetanus (thank god, because I actually did get a rusty piece of metal go into my skin.) I’ve also been vaccinated for Meningitis, Hep B, and pretty much anything else my doctors could find, since I was touching dead bodies. I’m doing well, my sisters are doing well, hell, all of you readers who were vaccinated are probably doing well!

WALL*E: A Butch/Femme Love Story…or Silly Rabbit, Robots Have No Gender!
‘I’m completely smitten with WALL•E, this summer’s Pixar/Disney offering. But the last thing I expected to see in my friendly, heterosexual upper east side Manhattan neighborhood movie theater was a feature length cartoon about a pair of lesbian robots who fall madly in love with each other. WALL•E is nothing short of hot, dyke Sci Fi action romance, some seven hundred years in the future! Woo-hoo! Isn’t that what you saw?
No? What movie were you watching?’

Face Transplant: In Pictures

‘A successful face transplant in a 30-year-old Chinese man who was attacked by the bear in October 2004. SOME MAY FIND THE FOLLOWING IMAGES DISTURBING.’

Schoolboy found hanged after his father confiscated his Wii

“Mr Roberts continued: ‘I honestly don’t think he meant to hang himself. I think he was mad about the computer game and just did something stupid.’

Mrs Roberts added that the family had watched an episode of the BBC drama Casualty together weeks, before which had featured a young person hanging themselves.

She said: ’It did occur to us a few weeks after this happened that we had seen a Casualty programme on a Saturday night at about 8pm.

‘This had shown a hanging. I know I was really shocked they had shown it at that time.

‘But I don’t think anything he had seen influenced him. When he was younger he had a bit of a temper and he’d had tantrums with us before.’

Recording a verdict of accidental death at the inquest in Scarborough Coroner Michael Oakley said: ’There is no evidence whatsoever that he took things he had seen into account.”

Woah, parents that aren’t jumping up the ass of the media and trying to blame them for the tragic death of their child? I’m amazed.

Virginia Woman Claims Sex Change Cost Her Job Offer

The Library of Congress has argued that Schroer cannot sue because the Civil Rights Act does not protect transsexuals or prohibit discrimination on the basis of gender identity.”

…the fuck? First of all, WHY are transsexuals not protected by the Civil Rights Act? And secondly, why is that the LoC’s argument? Shouldn’t the argument they use be something like “Hey, we found someone better.” or, I don’t know, something that at least makes a token attempt to cover their ass?

Ex-US Diplomat gets 20 years for child porn

” An ex-U.S. diplomat who admitted taping his sexual encounters with teenage girls while stationed in Brazil and the Congo was sentenced Friday to 20 years, the maximum possible prison term.

Gons G. Nachman, 42, had sought leniency, claiming among other things that cultural differences in those countries made sex with teenage girls more acceptable.

But U.S. District Judge Gerald Bruce Lee took the unusual step of imposing consecutive 10-year terms for the two counts on which Nachman was convicted.

“I reject out of hand completely the idea that I should take into account cultural differences,” Lee said. He said even if such differences exist, Nachman was answerable to U.S. standards and U.S. law while working as a diplomat on embassy grounds.”

Hey, anyone remember this guy? The one who said that it was ok for him to have sex with underaged girls coz they do it in the country he was in, and filmed it and brought it to the states? Who was a US diplomat? Who tried to get Brazilian woman who were applying for visa’s to have sex with him? Yeah, he got some jail time. I linked to the first article published about this guy. I won’t start the debate again, but personally I don’t think cultural relativity is an appropriate excuse for bad behavior.
